Resin patios and paths in Redcar

Resin-bound stone gives a smooth, joint-free surface that lets rain soak straight through. It is a good fit for winding garden paths, small courtyards and awkward shapes that would mean dozens of slab cuts.

What resin-bound means

Resin-bound surfacing is clean, dried aggregate mixed with a clear resin and trowelled into a flat, even layer. When it cures, the stones are locked together with tiny gaps between them, so water drains through instead of lying on top.

It is not the same as resin-bonded, where loose stone is scattered over a layer of resin. That gives a rougher, gritty finish and is not porous. For patios and paths, resin-bound is normally the one to ask for.

Why people pick resin

  • No joints. Nothing for weeds to root into and nothing to re-point.
  • Drains freely. Rain passes through, so long as the base underneath can take it or the water has somewhere to go.
  • Any shape. Curves, circles and odd corners are no harder than straight lines.
  • Plenty of colours. Natural stone blends from silver and grey to gold and bronze.
  • Even underfoot, which suits paths for older relatives, pushchairs and wheelchairs.

How it should be laid

Resin depends on what is under it and the weather on the day:

  1. A sound base. Usually a new porous base laid for the job, or existing concrete or tarmac if it is solid, level and free of cracks.
  2. Edging to contain the resin and give a crisp line against the lawn or borders.
  3. UV-stable resin. Ask for an aliphatic, UV-stable resin, which resists the yellowing that cheaper resins can show.
  4. Dry, mild conditions. Resin needs dry weather to cure, so on this coast we'll plan the day around the forecast and may avoid the coldest months.

Where resin suits best

Resin works well for paths that curve round a lawn, small yards behind terraced houses, areas round trees and patios with unusual shapes. If you would rather have the look of individual slabs, see porcelain or natural stone. Resin paths pair nicely with stone or porcelain steps.

Questions people ask

Can resin go on top of my old patio?

Sometimes. If the existing concrete or slabs are solid, level and not cracked or moving, resin can go over them. Loose or sunken slabs have to come up first, which we'll check at the visit.

Does wind-blown sand cause problems?

Near the beach, sand and grit can settle on any surface. On resin it is easy to brush off, and a regular sweep stops it clogging the surface.

Does resin go green?

Less than most surfaces because there are no joints, but shade and leaves can still lead to some growth. A brush and an occasional wash keep it clean.

How much does a resin patio cost?

It depends on the area, the base needed and the stone blend. See what affects the price or ask for a free quote.
